Dante was one of the greatest figures in European literature  in the 14th century.

His most important work was the DIVINA COMMEDIA written in terza rima.

It is an allegorical dream-vision in which  the  Latin  poet Virgil conducts the poet Dante through Hell  and Purgatory, then leaves him to meet Beatrice in an earthly Paradise

Dante is important for the following reasons:

he was the first to use Tuscan Italian  for writing poetry;

The Divine Comedy is a central work of European Christian culture;

Dante’s long-lasting influence is still to be found in some contemporary poetry
